Grilled Lobster Tails

Grilled Lobster Tails would have to be the easiest seafood to cook on a BBQ. They only take between 10 - 15 minutes a side to cook on a medium, direct grilling BBQ set up, depending on their size. They make an extravagant surf and turf meal served with a tender juicy steak. Or can be eaten on their own with delicious sides, in a salad or in a bread roll! In this blog post, I share my lobster tail preparation method, some tips and a superb marinade recipe you can use.

Method For Lobster Tail Preparation

Step one - With a sharp pair of kitchen scissors, cut through the top of the lobster shell lengthways, leaving the end tail fin intact.

Step two - Loosen and lift the lobster meat out of the shell so it’s slightly raised. Then lay the meat over the lobster shell.

Lobster Tail Marinade For Grilling

Makes enough for approximately 6 large lobster tails.

Ingredients

1/2 cup olive oil
2 garlic cloves (minced or pureed)
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 tablespoon of finely chopped fresh Parsley (can be substituted with 1.5 teaspoons of dried parsley)
Juice of one large lemon
1 teaspoon of dried oregano

Method

In a small bowl, combine all ingredients and brush the lobster tails with the marinade at least 20 minutes prior to grilling them. I like to make extra and set it aside to brush the grilled lobster tails as soon as they come off the hot grill and I'm ready to serve them.

Note - Grilled lobster tails are best served as soon as they come off the grill.

Grilled Lobster Tail Tips
  • Always start grilling lobster tails on a medium direct heat, shell side down for the first 10 - 15 minutes with the hood of your BBQ closed. Then turn them on to the meat side for a further 10 - 15 minutes of cooking.
  • You'll know the lobster meat is cooked when it is no longer translucent. You want a juicy succulent lobster meat which will not necessarily have any charred bits on it. You can also check the internal temperature which should read between 150 - 160f (65c - 71c).
  • If you don't have a BBQ, this method can also be used in an indoor oven. Preheat your oven to 200c, place the lobster tails shell down with the meat showing on top and bake them for 15 - 20 minutes in total.

My favourite way to eat lobster tails is in a roll. I grill the tail and place it in a soft delicious bread roll with lettuce and mayonnaise.
