I have loved fresh hot bread straight out of the oven my whole entire life! Who hasn't right?! Growing up with my mum and three sisters, we lived near an Italian bakery. We'd walk to the bakery early in the morning before school and they'd let us into their baking area where we'd buy the bread piping hot, straight out of their big Italian ovens.
I can't imagine a bakery allowing anyone so close to their ovens these days. We would walk back home eating a hot delicious roll for breakfast. I think my love affair for fresh bread started then. It explains why I can't stick to a carb free diet as an adult! Give me fresh bread, butter and a cup of coffee and I'm in heaven.
Fast forward a few years....I created a recipe for my own homemade bread as a teenager. I've used it at home in my indoor oven, outside on my BBQ and even when camping. It never lets me down! Recently, I've been baking bread in my Maximus Authentic Pizza Oven. It turns out absolutely scrumptious. There's nothing that compares to bread baked in a wood fired oven. Here's my recipe!
Homemade Bread Recipe
Ingredients
500 grams bakers flour
1 packet of dried yeast (7g)
1 teaspoon caster sugar
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
300mls warm water
Method
Step one - Add flour, yeast, caster sugar, olive oil and salt in a bowl.
Step two - Slowly add the water and mix until well combined.
Step three - Knead the dough. I use a Thermomix which takes 1.5 minutes but I grew up kneading bread by hand which took around 15 minutes. We couldn't afford a mixer back then. If you use a mixer that has a dough hook it will take around 10 minutes.
Step four - Allow the dough to rise in an oiled bowl for at least two hours. Then bake for around 45 minutes in your choice of oven. Indoors it takes around 45 minutes at 180c. Outside in a wood fired oven or BBQ it will take around 45 minutes to an hour. Make 3 slits in the dough and sprinkle with flour before baking.
